Since the dawn of Christianity, cemeteries have been an important part of Church life. Catholic Cemeteries especially celebrate stories of life, bonds of love and the tradition of faith. These are sacred spaces: places where we come to remember, to grieve and to pray. Each of our Charleston cemeteries, Holy Cross on James Island, St. Lawrence on the Peninsula and St. Peter in North Charleston, have their own fascinating history; all hold stories of great lives in our history, our communities and our families.

Welcome to the cemeteries of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston. Our cemeteries provide a dignified Christian burial to members of the Charleston and surrounding communities. By setting aside a holy place for burial, we offer a fitting environment for full liturgical celebrations. Just as in life, we believe that in death the human body deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. We foster a type of remembering that is enlightened by faith and sees death as a bridge to the Communion of Saints. We take great comfort in knowing our bond with the believing is not broken by death.

About

Pope’s Intention

This month, join Pope Francis in praying for people on the margins of society, in inhumane life conditions; may they not be overlooked by institutions and never considered of lesser importance.
